Dibond like its thicker version Alucobond was a product of Alusuisse (produced by Alusingen, Germany, originally) that has merged with Alcan the Canadian aluminium producer. Could be that the last company soon becomes part of Alcoa or the Biliton group. So check for the time being the Alcan sites and they can tell which distributors can precut the material. The sheets are used in signs, interiors, transport, ships, up to building cladding and in a variety of colors for Alucobond. The patent must have been ended meanwhile as I know the product for more than 20 years. I know several other companies that sell either the same product with another name or manufacture it themselves. BTW, Alusuisse was also the inventor of Forex or Sintra as it is called across the pond. http://www.alcancomposites.com/alcan/acsites.nsf/pages_ac_en/index.htm The core of both Dibond and Alucobond is a polyethylene and not a perspex (PMMA) as Kingma wrote. The two aluminium top layers are a hard grade aluminium and the core is the light polyethylene, it is inline produced when the still fluid extruded polyethylene is directly sandwiched between the two top layers, the polyethylene surface acting as the glue too. The durability and flatness is created with the top sheets, the sandwich makes the rigidity, the core the lightness if compared to aluminium sheets. While very rigid there are some disadvantages compared to mounting on 1.5 mm aluminium with a similar aluminium frame at the back. With the last the picture can be laminated on the aluminium and then cut together which allows less image loss at the edges if no margin is used. The edges then are also less visible and possibly stronger at the corners than the 0,5 mm thick aluminium layers of both ...bond materials. Mounting on bond materials means cutting the material first and laminating the print afterwards, cutting the surplus print with a knife. There's usually more image loss. If there's a need for extremely large displays then check Alucore as well. Special sizes can be ordered from the plant directly.
