Try cleaning the encoder strip first after you insure that the strip is assembled right. You pay have a blob of ink on it throwing the carriage reading off.

Upon power up, the printer went through its self-test and reported an error in the bail lift mechanism. The bail lift mechanism is engaged when the print carriage positions itself over a lever, which engages the gears that drive the lift cam. Instead of stopping above the lever, the carriage postions itself all the way to the left, past the lever, over the service station. It then jerks a short distance to the right about 9 times before halting and signaling an error. I have run all of the diagnostics in the service manaual except the bench test. All of the tests pass except the ones that require loading paper and the bail test. The print carriage moves freely over its full range in all the tests. Please help! Joe Stillman Collegeville, PA
