The above points are quite good. I agree as far as they go. Since I went through this process last year, I did a lot of research, including talking to photographers that I know personally.
I was urged to go for the 4800 rather than the 3800 because of concerns about built quality of the 3800. Many of the pros feel the 4800 is a more robust printer. 3800 is more pro-sumer design. I was close to buying either a 4800 or a canon 5000. I looked at operating costs of the epson and canon. WOW! B&W printing is not an issue for me because I still do silver gelatin in the darkroom up to 20x24 inch. I decided on the HP 130 because of the 24 inch size and costs. A 24 inch Epson 7800 is about $3,000 and replacement inks are expensive(my hp 130 is a referb and cost under $900). Even more so for the Canon printers (nearly $1,000 for a set of 12 inks and $1200 for two replacement print heads). Now when I talk with photographers that have expereince with all three brands, most say that the HP does not ever clog and waste ink. I have talked with printer company owners(neighbors) and the are overwhelmingly HP fans. If you are trying to sell through up-scale galleries, the pigment ink printers are definitely preferred. For other applications, where pigment inks are not a issue, the HP 30/90/130 are more relable and less expensive. HP 130 has made it to 105 year display life at Weilhelm and still going.
