Hi... With the printer turned on, go to "HP designjet System Maintenance" 
(usually from an icon on the desktop).  On the left there will be listed 
"advanced functions" under "maintenance".  If you hover over this you can then 
click on "get printer information".  Scroll down to "Ink Consumable Usage 
Section" and look at "Ink Consumed Cartridge"... there you will see how much 
ink each cart has used and, therefore, how much is left.  And like others have 
said, you can run the ink all the way out and then change the cart in the 
middke of a print!!  I have found, though, if the cart is not changed within 
30-60 seconds there will be a tell-tale line where the previous cartridge's ink 
has started to dry before the new ink takes over.  Hope this helps
