Reproduced in 0.9.9, so it is not new breakage.

Not reproduced in 0.9.7, it was introduced either in 0.9.8 or 0.9.9.

I will see if I can find a way to test 0.9.8, which I never packaged for
Debian.

It gets worse. It results on stuck jobs, stuck hpijs, stuck gs, and hpiod
may cause a severe local DoS if the syslog daemon is not smart enough to
start rejecting hpiod errors (filled up 2GB of logs in about 5 minutes with
the jobs stuck).  Ugh.
