I assume what you really want is some kind of "base" package
which can actually be used and installed without any graphical
stuff (e.g. so that HPLIP can be used on a server without pulling
in tons of graphical stuff)?

If I am right, I would also be very interested how to do such a
split in a clean way (i.e. the stuff in the "base" package must
work independent of the rest which requires graphical stuff).
