When I click on the "Print" button in the hp-toolbox I get a dialog with tabs to choose files and to add options for how the files should be printed, but what is missing are the options of the PPD file of the printer. So I am not able toaccess printer-specific functions, like paper trays, toner saving, printing on CDs, ... With CUPS this should be easy to implement, and as many applications have dialogs with access to PPD options (OpenOffice, KDE apps, GNOME apps with GTK 2.10 or newer, ...) I think the printing software supplied by the printer manufacturer should also give access to the complete functionality of the printer.
