Thanks again.  I note with gladness that I have /usr/bin/hp-setup
and that it dates from when I compiled the tarball.

Will I need to do something with CUPS before or after running hp-setup?
How will the printer name be determined?
By printer name, I mean the string that replaces name in
lpr -Pname fred.ps greg.pdf hank.txt

I'm taking a very long weekend out of town
and away from my computer and e-mail.
