reasoning behind this?
From my view, this is less comfortable and more cumbersome than
it was before.

Yes, no problem.
I agree that it is not as "user friendly", but their were several
technical and security issues with the code the way it was. Also, the
code didn't work properly on several distros. So, to create a consistent
experience and to plug the security holes, I disabled the "automatic
launch" of hp-sendfax, for now. I am hoping that by using dbus or
another mechanism, I will be able to offer this feature again sometime
in the future.
