Hm, this is what I would try, to have a nice printer interface
and to make this printer basically running:

Go to http://localhost:631/printers and
click on "add printer", then you will need to configure the
connection to the printer and then choose the manufacturer "HP"
and your model 5L, preferably the one, which says "recommended"

Now, the printer should be set up. From
http://localhost:631/printers, once again, you can then click on
"modify printer" and set up things like paper format and which
tray to use per default, according to your preferences.
.
Afterwards, I would expect your printer to properly print a
testpage.

If this works, one could look into the nice things
like multiple pages on one sheet of paper.

For what it is worth,
I do not remember about the 5L, but my ancient Laserjet 4 prints
easyly up to 4 pages to one sheet of paper, just via cups and
ghostscript, without using any hplip components..

If none of this works, you might provide more insight about what
Linux you are using, what you tried to do and what the
error messages were.

Hopefully this helps
kind regards
Eberhard
