Hi,
printing is working now. 

What I did:
deleted anything hplip related and anything that only roughly
resembled what the "apt-get..." command in the ubuntu
6.06 web doc suggests and then run the respective "apt-get...
command" once again, download anything freshly and then install
cleanly the most recent version of hplip and... 

...VOILA: 
hp-setup works, hp-makeuri is working,
queues are created and printing is working!
I did not try fax and scan yet, because I wanted to reserve some
surprise for tomorrow ;-)
