OK, I'll do this. I was reluctant to mess around with configuration options I didn't understand. I didn't know whether one of those backends might be a "core" module that was required by the others. > > The command line tools don't seem to be > > installed with the standard SuSE installation of hplip > > They are installed in /usr/share/hplip/ without the leading "hp-", > e.g.: /usr/share/hplip/makeuri (bot no /usr/bin/hp-makeuri). Ah. I did a whereis search and didn't find them. I never considered looking for them under another name. I think it's great that SuSE includes hplip. Excellent hardware support is one of the reasons I use SuSE. In my case the older version of hplip didn't recognize the my new printer and I needed to download and build the current release anyway. With a little effort and after a couple mistakes I got it working, but it would be nice if HP included hplip and SANE on a disc with the printer. This ease of use is really important for linux newbies and should be less difficult to provide now that more distros are (becoming) LSB compliant. That said, HP desktop MFP support is already better than anyone else's (that I could find at least). I bought my LaserJet 3052 *because* hplip and SANE support all the major functions on Linux. IMHO this is a case of "If you build it, they will come". I little investment in drivers and support now will payoff with greater product sales in the future... but you probably have already heard all this.
