just an update on the below issue. I unplugged the printer, turned it off, replugged the USB cable, and restarted all the services (hplip, cups, samba) and voila, all's working. I guess I'm not a printing specialist (not even on windoze), cos I should have tried that long ago.
So to sum it up (other than I'm a numb-nut), hplip works fine with ubuntu breezy server install, just remember to: apt-get install cups gs.

Check the system requirements page on our website. If gs is failing you
may need to ensure gs is installed/setup correctly. Also try checking
the /var/log/messages for any error messages.
