It's just an easy and absolutely painless way to effortlessly make rpms or debs or slack packages out of software that is *only* available as a tarball. It plainly works for me 90% of the times I use it. While I regard "make uninstall" in the case of hplip to do a really good job, unfortunately, not any software has deinstall tools that are as powerful.
