Oops. I should have checked this before sending my reply, but I
thought I'd send this along right away, since this may be supremely
relevant here.

At
<http://linuxprinting.org/kpfeifle/LinuxKongress2002/Tutorial/VII.cups-help/VII.cups-help.html>
it says:

How to tell your printer's PPD

For every installed printer (apart from "raw" printers), there is a
copy of the companion PPD in the /etc/cups/ppd/ directory, named like
your printer with a .ppd extension. (Hint: you don't need to put this
file manually there; it's done by the lpadmin command or the web
installation interface). Example: a printer named "MySuperDuperInkjet"
will have a /etc/cups/ppd/MySuperDuperInkjet.ppd. A nice trick: You
can look at a PPD in use for a particular printer through your browser
(if your CUPS daemon is running) by pointing it to
http://localhost:631/printers/MySuperDuperInkjet.ppd. Amongst the
first 25 lines of this file you should recognize lines like the
following: . . . .

Most important is the line starting "*NickName...". It should always
be there and tell you which sort of PPD is in use. Supply this
information, if it is related to your problem!

(If you are not able to access the file through you browser, the
command "head -n 25 /etc/cups/ppd/MySuperDuperInkjet.ppd" will also
get you there.)

. . . . . .

Well, needless to say, following the discovery of this little passage I
indeed, looked into the etc. directory of my system. There is no CUPS
subdirectory there.

I tried the instructions there for finding it on the machine:

output: "linux-p9wc:/home/[my name] # head -n 25 /etc/cups/ppd/hpclj2605.ppd
head: cannot open `/etc/cups/ppd/hpclj2605.ppd' for reading: No such
file or directory"

and on the Web at "<http://www.etc.com/cups/ppd/hpclj2605dn.ppd>.

output:

"message: NOT FOUND The requested URL /cups/ppd/hpclj2605dn.ppd was
not found on this server.

Apache/1.3.26 Server at www.etc.com Port 80"

Perhaps my cups daemon isn't running?????
