this is how I can reproduce the problem: # make /etc/hosts contain just the following line (and the ipv6 stuff) 127.0.0.1 localhost rechner4 this line is identical to the state as it was left by the kubuntu installation. rechner4 is the hostname set at installation time. # shutdown dsl-connection ppp0 # remove all iptables entries to be sure they are not the reason # the local network interface eth0 remains active but this makes not difference # /etc/init.d/hplip restart results in the following messages in /var/log/messages Oct 13 21:25:17 rechner4 hpiod: 0.9.7 accepting connections at 60198... Oct 13 21:25:18 rechner4 hpiod: Rejected connection from 192.168.0.4 # the following obviously is a result of the unsuccessful startup of hplip: when I now try to start xscanimage (the otherwise working usb scanner is plugged in and switched on) -> xscanimage hangs indefinitely without any output, and the following appears in /var/log/messages Oct 13 21:28:53 rechner4 hpiod: Rejected connection from 192.168.0.4 Oct 13 21:28:53 rechner4 python: hpssd [WARN] Inrecognized URI: parallel:/dev/lp0 -- Ernst Kloppenburg Heimerdingen, Germany -- Ernst Kloppenburg Heimerdingen, Germany ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Using Tomcat but need to do more?
