This is not my thread, but I've posted about similar problems on a HP 3055.
I just use the --mode=Lineart flag to scanimage:
# scanimage --mode=Lineart > /dev/null
scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O

I've tested a Photosmart 3310 over the network using Suse 10.1 and I was
able to use lineart scanning with scanimage.
I'll need more information to continue troubleshooting.
