Just to be totally clear, I would not classify this as a bug, but rather a
performance limitation that occurs because of numerous factors: the protocol
being used, firmware performance, etc. It is simply a slow method of
accessing the data from a photo card. However, we support it so that there
is access over a network or if USB mass storage doesn't function for some
reason. As a backup method, its slowness is irritating, but generally
tolerable in a pinch. We do not recommend it for regular usage unless the
amount of data to transfer is small.

It's not a serious problem now as I have worked out how to transfer
the data from my camera directly.  I was only trying the printer card
sockets because I couldn't originally get my system to see my camera
as a mass storage device.
