I had problems (now solved) with installing this under Ubuntu 6.06. A first attempt hung at ./configure, and had to be killed. Running ./configure manually showed a dependency problem, with libjpeg support not installed.
After installing lots of jpeg to be on the safe side, I re-ran "sh ./hplip*run", but the install stopped at make. sudo make worked fine, so I assume there was a permissions problem in the shell script. I finally threw caution to the winds, and ran "sudo sh ./hplip*run", and everything worked fine. Now my new HP OfficeJet 6310 is working beautifully.
