Folks, I have a HP 3300 Multi-Function Printer at home which I've been using with Linux. Recently, I upgraded all my home computers to Fedora Core 6, and now the computers can all print to the device, but whenever I attempt to scan a page, I get the error message, "Failed to start scanner: Document feeder out of documents". I've tried it from three computers, a Dell P3 950 MHz P3, a homebuilt Athlon 1700+, and a new Toshiba laptop with an Intel Core 2 Duo. All three have fresh installations (I didn't upgrade, there should be no old drivers or configuration files), and they are updated with current bugfixes. The version of hplip is reported by rpm as hplip-1.6.10-1.fc6.4.
It is important to note that the (driver/configuration file) that is selected to use this device by SANE is called, "HP Laserjet 3300/3310/3320:HP_Laserjet_3300...". (I'm writing this error report at work, I performed a screen capture of the error message, but I can't scroll/expand the window to see the rest of the name.) Some of the 33x0 MFP models have a document feeder, or perhaps it is an option, but mine DOES NOT HAVE A DOCUMENT FEEDER that could be empty, so it's obvious that the software is confused. I think that the software (as configured for these devices) does not make a distinction between the lack of a document feeder and an empty one. I have searched for reports of this error online and have seen reports of this problem from users of several different recent Linux distributions, but currently I can only find one: SuSE 10.1 - http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/message.php?msg_id=37366088. I saw one a few weeks ago which included instructions that said something like "download the software from HP, comment out the following lines, (two or three lines), and recompile". I downloaded the latest version of hplip, found the lines, commented them out and recompiled, but couldn't get it integrated into my distribution. Then I was on travel for a week and am just getting back to work on the problem. I saw another report of the same error message from someone who was running Ubuntu the other day, but didn't have enough details from my own experience to write a proper error report at the time, and I can't find it now. My HP 3300 MFP has worked fine (including scanning) under previous versions of Fedora (FC2, and perhaps FC4, I can't remember). If I recall correctly, at the time, the software was called "hpoj" or something similar. Other reports indicated that they had also used their 3300 MFPs to scan without error under previous distributions of Linux. In summary: 1) Multiple computers with diverse hardware see the same symptoms. Printing works and SANE recognizes the device well enough that it uses a configuration file which contains the device's name. This helps eliminate a lot of potential problem sources, e.g., power not on, hardware incompatibility, USB misconfigured or disconnected, etc. 2) The problem occurs under several different recent distributions of Linux, but did not occur under previous versions of driver software. One report indicated that modifications to the hplip software solved the problem. This makes me think that the problem is distribution agnostic - it is in the SANE software or more likely is a bug in the hplip software itself.
