I've lost the ability to scan because my scanner is no longer found by
scanimage -L, or sane-find-scanner.
Using Ubuntu 6.06, and OfficeJet V40 multi-function printer connected
directly by USB.
I'm not sure which automatic update killed it, so I tried to fix it by
upgrading to HPLIP 1.6.12 and libusb 0.1.8
No success. But now I have the latest version of everything!
Looking at other posts in the archives I noticed there were a few
diagnostics commonly requested.
One, (hp-setup) shows what appears to be a serious error but I have no idea
what to do:

p.s. I'm certain the hardware is all working because I can re-boot to
Windows and it works fine.
