hplip version 1.6.12 fedora core 5 (fully updated) The installer script worked fine. Took a bit to figure out how to configure the printer in the cups system and create a queue for it.
The problem is that the printer must be power cycled after every print job. After some experimentation I have narrowed it down to the following: To achieve error free operation the printer must be powered off with the power switch on the printer or unplugged after every print job. Then turned back on. If this is done without fail the printer otherwise functions as expected. Needless to say that the powercycle thing is a very major pita that if not resolved will result in the printer being returned to the place of purchase. If a second print job is sent to the printer without powercycling, the power and resume lights on the printer will flash rapidly. The printer must then be powercycled and cups stopped, hplip restarted, and cups started. The pending print job will then immediately print. If there are multiple print jobs in the queue this scenario will have to be repeated until the queue is empty. The addresses used by the USB subsystem increments after every powercycle. I think this is expected and normal behavior. What to my eye is not normal is the driver removal after sending a print job. With the driver gone a second print job gets an expected "no device" error. /* log entries upon powering on printer */ Jan 7 13:30:06 faith kernel: usb 4-6: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 33 Jan 7 13:30:06 faith kernel: usb 4-6: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Jan 7 13:30:06 faith kernel: hub 4-6:1.0: USB hub found Jan 7 13:30:06 faith kernel: hub 4-6:1.0: 2 ports detected Jan 7 13:30:06 faith kernel: usb 4-6.1: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 34 Jan 7 13:30:06 faith kernel: usb 4-6.1: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Jan 7 13:30:06 faith kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB Bidirectional printer dev 34 if 0 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x7704 /* log entries when printing a document */ Jan 7 13:30:49 faith hpiod: removing usblp driver interface=0 for hp:/usb/Deskjet_D4100_series?serial=TH6618328004D6 io/hpiod/device.cpp 504 Jan 7 13:30:49 faith kernel: drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: removed /* log entries when attempting to print a second document */ /* without power cycling printer */ Jan 7 13:38:14 faith hpiod: unable to write data hp:/usb/Deskjet_D4100_series?serial=TH6618328004D6: No such device io/hpiod/channel.cpp 63 Jan 7 13:38:14 faith hpiod: invalid Device::DeviceID: No such device hp:/usb/Deskjet_D4100_series?serial=TH6618328004D6 io/hpiod/device.cpp 771 Jan 7 13:38:14 faith Deskjet_D4100_series?serial=TH6618328004D6: ERROR: check device; will retry in 30 seconds... -- I reason and act, therefore, ken_i_m Chief Gadgeteer, Elegant Innovations Founder, Bozeman Linux Users Group Founder, Helena Linux Users Group (406) 581-0495 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Take Surveys.
