The DJ D4100/D4160 problem still exists with HPLIP 1.7.1 (ie: printer
christmas-trees on second print job). The problem is some what
intermittent. For example we can reproduce the problem in-house on 2 of
3 Linux systems. A D4160 production unit we have failed on FC3 and
Ubuntu very consistently, but I have a 64-bit FC5 box which works ok.

The problem is not CUPS backend specific, kernel specific or USB
full/high speed specific. The problem appears to be a printer USB
firmware issue. We are working with the product team in order to
determine any work around.
