yes, you have to install printers using the "hp:" CUPS backend for them to
work with HPLIP (HPIJS only setups can use any backend). Try installing them
using hp-setup and see if that works (they can be installed multiple times
using different URIs (backends, etc)).

Does the hp-check output tell folks why CUPS sees the printer
definitions,
but HPLIP/HPISJ don't?
I'd really like to resolve this issue so I can once again print duplex
on
the LJ5.
