Ok, I did:

$ export SANE_DEBUG_DLL=128
$ export SANE_DEBUG_HPAIO=128
$ scanimage  -d hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_3055?ip=192.168.22.100 --resolution 
600 --mode lineart  > test.pnm 2> debug.log

I also tried:
 
$ scanimage  -d hpaio:/net/HP_LaserJet_3055?ip=192.168.22.100 --resolution 
1200 --mode lineart  > test2.pnm 2> debug2.log

but this didn't work: I got an error and the pnm file was unreadable.

debug.log and debug2.log are attached
