Can you try this:
1. Kill hpssd:
$ ps ax | grep hpssd
$ kill <pid from ps>
2. Flush CUPS queue:
$ lpq -a
$ lprm <and jobids for the fax queue>
3. Turn on CUPS debug logging

4. Re-try. If it fails, check the CUPS error_log and post it here.
