net-snmp was missing indeed. After I installed it, the problem went away.

Is net-snmp always required for hplip ? Or only when using a networked 
printer. In the former case, I think I should file a bug for CentOS (and 
Mandriva, where I was having a similar problem), because they didn't mark 
net-snmp as a dependency for hplip.
