Hi everybody,

I need your help.

I'm trying to use a
HP Photosmart C4100 with Debian Etch (stable).

The HPLIP
package for Debian Etch seems not to work with HP Photosmart C4100. So
that, I uninstalled the hlip (1.6.10-3), hlip-data (1.6.10-3) and hlip-dbg
(1.6.10-3) debian stable packages using the default package manager
(aptitude). I uninstalled the hpijs (2.6.10+1.6.10-3) package, too.

The Debian etch uses ghostscript 8.15.3 (package: gs-esp) that is
currently installed and the foomatic package is 3.0.2.

The CUPS
server installed is 1.2.7-4 (packages: cupsys, cupsys-bsd, cupsys-client,
cupsys-common).

I successfully downloaded and installed the
hplip-2.7.7.run file from the hplip home site.

The 'hp-setup'
program detected the C4100 printer so that I was able to properly
configure the printer.

The 'hp-check' program reported that
everything was OK

The 'hp-probe' reported everything was fine
with the following device URI:

hp:/usb/Photosmart_C4100_series?serial=MY72EJ11B304J7

The log
in /var/log/message file after the printer power on was:

usb 1-2: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and
address 2
    usb 1-2: configuration #1 chosen from 1
choice
    drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: usblp0: USB
Bidirectional printer dev 2 if 1 alt 0 proto 2 vid 0x03F0 pid 0x5711
    usbcore: registered new driver usblp
    drivers/usb/class/usblp.c: v0.13: USB Printer Device
Class driver
    SCSI subsystem initialized
    Initializing USB Mass Storage driver...
scsi0 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage
devices
    usbcore: registered new driver

registered.
    Vendor:
HP        Model: Photosmart C4180
Rev: 1.00
    Type:
Direct-Access
ANSI SCSI revision: 02
    sd 0:0:0:0: Attached scsi
removable disk sda

Therefore the printer is correctly detected
and is accessible from 'hp-scan' program (to use the built-in flatbed
scanner) and the memory slots (for photocards) are accessible, too.

But, when I try to print, CUPS reports an entry in print queque
but this entry is not printed; the /var/log/message contains the following
message:

    localhost
Photosmart_C4100_series?serial=MY72EJ11B304J7: INFO: open device failed;
will retry in 30 seconds...

When I list the processes that are
running I find:

I can't find a way
out... Can anybody help me ?

Thanks in advance.

Achille.
