I can only guess that you use a USB scanner. I assume it is just one more of the low-level USB I/O problems for which I don't know a solution except to try out the stuff at http://en.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_Scanners_from_SUSE_LINUX_9.2 "USB Cable Connection and Additional USB Hubs" and "Trouble-Shooting (Debugging)".
