I believe that we recommended GIMP in our how-to documentation mainly
because GIMP is not tied to any particular desktop (its installed on both
KDE and GNOME systems generally) and that people are pretty used to it.
Obviously, there are numerous programs that can do a simple resize and PS
export, so we decided to just document one.

As far as print settings, we are fully CUPS integrated, so you should be
able to set options, query the PPD file, etc. just like any other printer.
We do just that in the Print Settings tab of the HP Device Manager.
