I don't think that it is an issue anymore as the printer just smoked. Apparently some ink had somehow leaked onto the main logic board and caused a short. The last few days it just got progressively worse even on one sided printing, and then today it started to smoke. It has been replaced with a HP Officejet Pro L7780.
