First look up at the sourceforge hplip page whether your printer is
supported, and, if yes, which of its features are available on Linux.

If it is supported, install the gutsy supplied hplip package, ex. via
synaptic. And then, finally, use hp-setup to configure the printer.
With Ubuntu, you need to use "sudo hp-setup" for this (without the quotes.

It's easy, intuitive and works great, if your printer is supported, that is.
