and as I did not have libusb installed, it's not surprising it didn't work! 
Have now installed and recreated printer in CUPS, and it all works without 
problem.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Perhaps add this to the Troubleshooting 
section of the docs, as I suspect several other threads, including the one I 
referred to, had a similar problem?

at least on my setup, /dev/bus/usb/* are symlinks to /dev/usbdevxxx.xxx
