Seems to me it is a configuration issue. XP should produce printer ready
bits and send it over
to your Fedora box via samba. Cups will then ship the bits to the device
directly if the config files
are correct, which seems to be since you can print from Vista. Something
in the port settings on
the XP side maybe? Is XP erroring out or is it sending anything over to
your fedora box at all?

Subject: [Hplip-help] Using HP OfficeJet as a shared printer on Fedora
Hello all..
I have a Fedora core 4 server on my home network. I use the server
primarily for backups and for file sharing with my Windows machines, but
I have also attached an HP OfficeJet 5510 (Print/scan/fax/copy) printer
to it. I would like to use it as a shared printer that could receive
print jobs from the Windows machines (One XP Home PC and one Vista
laptop).
CUPS/SAMBA appear to be working correctly. The printer shows up along
with my shared directories on the XP machines. I can connect to it and
print to it without any issues from the Vista laptop (Scanning also
works fine using XSANE on either windows box). Only problem remaining is
that I cannot print from the XP box. I can see the printer.. I just
can't print to it. I've used HP specific drivers and the built-in HP
OfficeJet driver that XP ships with but neither one works. I am also
unable to update the driver.
Short of upgrading my PC to Vista.. I'm completely out of ideas. Any
thoughts? Just for completeness, the output of my "hp-check" is:
