...which is usually only the application's built-in optimistic

...which is according to my experience the currently most annoying
problem of printing from applications: produce printing output
which doesn't exceed the imageable area of the actual printer...

...which is only a less optimistic guess but not the real imageable
area of the actual printer - but with most current applications
it is the best you can do: set the unprintable margins in the
application sufficiently big.

By the way:
Since CUPS 1.2 there is a "fitplot" option, see the CUPS documentation
http://www.cups.org/documentation.php/options.html
"Scaling to Fit"
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The -o fitplot option specifies that the document should be scaled
to fit on the page:
  lp -o fitplot filename
  lpr -o fitplot filename
The default is to use the size specified in the file.
Note:
This feature depends upon an accurate size in the print file.
If no size is given in the file, the page may be scaled incorrectly!
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Perhaps "-o fitplot" works for the PostScript from your application,
perhaps not.

Kind Regards
