I've actually found how to freeze columns and rows thanks to an reply to
the same question asked on the Surrey LUG list...

To freeze top row, move to A1 and select Freeze on the Window menu.

Do that in B1 to freeze column A and to B2 to freeze both the first row
and first column.

Thanks for your help.

I've also found the list of over four hundred keyboard shortcuts in
tools/customize/keyboard
