Binary comparison won't work if the host has done any normalization, compression, etc., so that leaves some kind of fuzzy comparison. Usually, for music, that means a Fourier transform, but this is admittedly beyond my ken. The work done by http://echoprint.me/ might be of interest here. It's a project to do music fingerprinting for applications like search.
