I don't necessarily know what I'm doing, but I thought I'd share in case
it helps others to avoid what I did! Process of elimination...

1. In Audacity the audio just shows garbage after 45 minutes or so.

2. Using the 'sox' family of tools I tried sampling beyond the 45 minute
boundary:

for t in {55..80..5}; do
   echo ">>> play rms.flac trim $t:00 1:00"
   play rms.flac trim $t:00 1:00
done

My understanding is that 'trim 55:00 1:00' means "play from 55 minutes
in for 1 minute".

In all cases I just got an error report including the text:

play WARN trim: Last 2 position(s) not reached (audio shorter than expected)
