Hi All,
I am planning to "retire" from the Hacker Public Radio Janitorial
Team. I have been helping to administer HPR for over 12 years now. I
first offered help to Ken in 2012 in response to an appeal he made. We
met at OggCamp in that year, and I joined the Community News recording
for episode 1066 in September 2012. My first show was 1091 in October
that year.
I will turn 75 in December 2024, and am finding that I don't have the
energy to do as much as I could when I first joined. I also want to be
able to devote more time to the various personal projects I have.
I plan to consolidate all my scripts on the HPR Gitea repositories,
and document all the processes I have been looking after. I want to
have completed the handover by the end of March 2025.
I will continue as an HPR host for as long as I can after that.
I have had a wonderful 12 years as an HPR Janitor and will always look
back on it with great pleasure.
Best wishes to all of the Janitors!
Dave
Having Dave on board was amazing. HPR would not be ${whatever hpr is
actually} without him creating and building personal relationships with
people. I would hazard to say that he was instrumental in getting many
involved in the project and keeping many more.
For me personally, I consider him to be a true friend. Behind the scenes
he has been supportive of me and my family during many tough times,
which I would not have gotten through without his support. It was an
absolute pleasure to have had the chance to spend so much time with him
over the OggCamp Weekend, and I look forward to a repeat next year.
In short Dave is a Scholar and a Gentleman - and I have taken advantage
of this for far too long. I am therefore thrilled that he is stepping
back, and doing some other stuff. I'm sure it will be done with the same
dedication and skill that are his hall mark.
Thanks Ken!
I am a bit at a loss for words in responding to this great message!
I knew there was an unusual guy called Ken Fallon who was behind HPR
when I first started listening to the podcast in its fairly early days.
I found him to be a generous, warm-hearted and dynamic individual when
we met at the Liverpool OggCamp in 2012. I also met a number of the HPR
community members that year, and found myself agreeing to join in with
an upcoming Community News show, persuaded by Ken of course.
It wasn't long before I found myself helping out with running HPR and
doing my first episode. My retirement up to that point had been a bit
lacking in direction, with a fair bit of watching really awful TV and
generally being bored. Before long I was being kept busy by doing stuff
for HPR, which was far better.
Hanging out with Ken at the various OggCamp meetings was a delight, as
were our FOSDEM visits, which we both attended for a few years. I
certainly consider Ken to be a close friend, and was delighted to meet
him and Manon when they both visited Edinburgh in November 2023.
I have made friends through HPR, and met many of them at OggCamp and
other events. I have even recorded HPR episodes with several of them
over the years. It's been a great time.
I will not be leaving the HPR community, as I said in my email, and may
well go to the next OggCamp. So I hope to continue the HPR journey for
many more years, but as a "civilian".
Dave
