Hi Torin

First "Policy decisions are proposed and discussed on the Mailing list <https://hackerpublicradio.org/maillist>, which is open to anyone to join." https://hackerpublicradio.org/about.html#governance

I think most people agree that the show as posted fell outside what is acceptable to discuss in a Hacker Space. We are a Tech Podcast dedicated to sharing knowledge, but we are not stopping anyone talking about their views on religion, politics, sex, distro of editor of choice, etc.. That is part of who we are, and it informs us as people.

I for one would like to see people submit shows on religion that are suitable for this Hacker Space. These might be technical in nature, or more social like advice shows for people not of the faith but who have been invited to attend an event in your place of worship, or coordinated round table discussion/series of shows, with people of different/no faiths posting their views on the same agreed topic with the same agreed format. Just keep in mind that every religion has oppressed and been oppressed, and that we are a welcoming community that offers positive feedback and encourages respectful debate. Expect a well reasoned response to follow from your post. You can use the new "Religion and Spirituality" series, and keep to the one every two weeks guide line for both host and series.

Anyone not into this kind of stuff can use the delete key, or filter out that series.

Hi Henrik,

Sorry for the delay in replying.

We can derive little from the host, except that they said they had no where else to post it. That is a shame, given all the people that commented on this post wanting to hear this exact type of thing.

Does anyone know of a religious podcast that accepts submissions like this one ?

Ken.

Hi,

I have not read, nor requested, the transcript.

Based on the description and arguments by Ken/janitor, I am fine and agree with the decision.

However, I want to share an open thought I have.

Beside the judgement of the content and reasoning described by Ken below; has/can/should the decision take into account the previous interaction/partcipation that the host(s) has had with HPR? I mean, if the host(s) before eg has given shows which clearly are of hackers interest, given relevant comments on other shows, interacted with HPR at Matrix, Mastodon etc, in a positive hacker way, would that be taken into account for decision for this particular episode. Or for that matter the opposite, if such interactions have been of a very non-hacker way. This in relation to if this rejected show was the first known interaction with HPR by the host(s). Or is each show fully only reviewed on its own merits.

Hi All,

This is to inform you that I am rejecting a show on the grounds that it falls under "hate speech/spam/using HPR as a means to push a particular product or view".

This came to light when I was scrubbing <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ Scrubbing_%28audio%29> through the audio when posting the show. This is allowed by the policy We do not vet, edit, moderate or in any way censor any of the audio you submit, we trust you not to upload anything that will harm HPR. Aside from checking snippets for audio quality/spam checking, we have a policy that we don't listen to the shows before they are aired. <https://lists.hackerpublicradio.com/pipermail/hpr/2022- June/004492.html>

The show itself would best be described as a religious sermon. Given that is a particularly sensitive topic, I have consulted with some HPR elders who have publicly shared their belief or lack their of, to get their opinion. They unanimously agreed that it is spam, in the sense of "using HPR as a means to push a particular product or view".

The point has been made that it "could be of interest to hackers", however the full policy is: There is no restriction on how long the show can be, nor on the topic you can cover as long as they are not spam and "are of interest to Hackers" <https://hackerpublicradio.org/ about.html#community>, so that doesn't apply in the case of spam. There will always be someone who will click on a spam link, or the business model would not work.

We are a Tech Podcast dedicated to sharing knowledge, and we are not stopping anyone talking about their views on religion, politics, sex, distro of editor of choice, etc.. That is part of who we are, and it informs us as people.

However this is also a Hacker Space, not a place of worship. That said I have been happy to see many shows where people have been working on something for their place of worship, and have received support and assistance from people who were not of that faith. We are a welcoming community that offers positive feedback and encourages respectful debate <https://lists.hackerpublicradio.com/pipermail/hpr/2019- December/003804.html>.

So if you have something to say then say it. Ideally in the form of a show, as I'm currently posting yet another three shows from the Reserve queue ;-(
