There aren't many surprises on standard maps; the Andes' location is shown by
relatively obvious contour lines. However, the unpublished maps we create of
our city, our location, our everyday world, and our lives—the maps of our
private world that we use on a daily basis—are more valuable. For example, I
was happy when I left my coat behind after a party and met my love there; I
once cried there because I was heartbroken, but I felt better when I turned the
corner and saw the hills of Fife across the Forth. These kinds of things, our
personal memories that make up the private tapestry of our lives.
