Ok, makes (partial) sense. Even then you should have been able to base your initialization code on the existing mechanisms without rolling your own factory object etc. My suspicion is that the issue is caused by C++'s undefined order of initialization of global objects. Things have not been initialized at the point of the exception, even if the code relies on it.
