It is now a year since we released HSQLDB 1.60.

There is something special to the HSQLDB project and that is: We did not
start from scratch, our charter is to continue and improve HypersonicSQL
that was developed by Thomas Meuller.

We would not achieve this just by paying homage to Thomas (which he very
well deserves). We have extended the capabilites of this software, well
aware that over 30,000 people have downloaded the current release version of
HSQLDB. These are developers who use HSQLDB in their projects. Personally I
would like this to be 300,000 next time we look back.

1.7.0 RC4 will be out very soon. The performance improvements that I wrote
about on Saturday have been verified by different tests. And all the
enhancements that were contributed as patches by users and developers, or
made afterwards by Campbell, Bob. Peter, or myself, are there.

Bob has revamped the org.hsqldb.util package. This is a not specific to
HSQLDB. If you want to transfer data between Informix and PostgreSQL
databases, Transfer Tool is the best tool you can get anywhere. This is an
area we can extend. A plug-in structure is now in place, allowing you to
contribute dialect-specific conversions between any pair of databases.

Also this week, we will hopefully have the CVS structure in place. We will
set up branches for different features or new developments, as was suggested
in the Open Discussion Forum.

HSQLDB has always been a project driven by the its users. Many improvements
in the new release were contributed by them. I hope we move forward with
more active participation by our users, contributors and developers. Please
let us know what you what, how you can contribute and where you think we
should focus. Either post to the list, or myself.
