1. JDK 1.1 compatibility is still required for some PDA and similar
platforms.

2. The new Map classes were not written for JDK 1.1 compatility but
primarily to implement the memory object pool and Java primitive maps. The
new classes use far less memory than java.util.* classes and create very few
objects. This makes them usable especially for heavily updated maps and sets
with low memory footprint.

Maybe because HSQLDB also works with jdk1.1? I think I saw a comment to
that effect somewhere in the source ...
