Hello Clayton,

The HSQLDB has a number of built-in functions. Please check out the
documentation. It seems like you need one of two functions:

IFNULL(exp,value)

if exp is null, value is returned else exp)

COALESCE(expr1,expr2,expr3,...)[2<http://hsqldb.org/doc/guide/ch09.html#ftn.posthyper>
]

if expr1 is not null then it is returned else, expr2 is evaluated and if not
null it is returned and so on
