Yes, but lets just say that bumping the .version was about the last 
thing on my list. It's fixed now and this week's version should be 
correct.

First off, when you compiled, did it include optimization? 
Unfortunately, debugging with optimization is a bit difficult. But I 
suspect it may be due to the new cookie support that IIRC Gabriele 
got into that snapshot.

And why were the work files a problem?

As far as your oft-repeated performance woes, I'll repeat it again. 
I'd be glad to take a look at performance issues if I can get 
reliable stats. To do this, I need to know things like your hardware, 
the size of your databases, whether you're pulling over the network, 
etc. And if you're really willing to help, I'd love to see things run 
through gprof. (For instructions on compiling with profiling (which 
will run very slowly, see the Makefile.config.)

Comparisons to 3.1.5 would help significantly too. Are the databases 
larger, smaller, about the same?
