OK, I put these in. It's too bad we have to lose the config[] syntax, but
it's no great loss. After putting in the Makefile.config changes, I re-ran
automake to regenerate new Makefiles.

You should take a look at this--I ran an emacs macro over the file, but
I'm not sure if I got it right--your patch failed and I couldn't see why.
