I haven't seen any responses to your question, but I think perhaps either Michael Haggerty or Geoff Hutchison should be able to answer. Both of them are working on, or planning to work on, some pretty major restructuring of the htsearch code, at least in part to make it easier to use the searcher classes in other programs. With the 3.2.0b4 code as it stands now, I don't think it's that easy to just strip out what you need. -- Gilles R.
