Your insight is muchly appreciated.

Looking at where I am right now, I realize I was building a script with
two competing goals and I had boxed myself into a corner (but was still
swinging!)

I was originally trying to enhance rundig.3.2.sh so that it could
update a database in-place (which it currently does) as well as update
a database in a separate build directory.  So I was juggling the
"*.work" files and having databases in separate directories (thus the
htfuzzy problems).

I agree that adding a "-D" flag (or whatever) will be very useful.  For
now, my script will depend on two different config files (a build
config and a search config).
