As the maintainer of htdig in debian I am also responsible for the documentation that comes with htdig.(the htdig-doc package).
Recently an error was filed against that package,
http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=198740
However, to me it looks like the upstream thing (the doc at http://www.htdig.org) is not quite up to date for the 2.3.0b5 release.
Also imo, the applications defaults should be to index localhost, rather than http://www.htdig.org
